Subfloor preperation
As with any job well done, preparation is the key to a successful job. However, many installations are let down at this key stage.
At Design Floors Direct, we advise on and undertake all sub-floor preparation ourselves. We use only the best brand name levelling compounds. We provide a free moisture check as well. This can be used to ascertaine if substrate is stable and humidity does not exceed 75 degrees. When moisture levels exceed this guideline, it’s generally caused by one of three things. Either the substrate does not have an adequate DPM, there is an under-ground plumbing leak, or in the case of a new build, simply needs more drying-out time*
*As a general rule of thumb, all newly poured sand & cement subfloors need 'One month per Inch' of drying-out time plus two weeks to be on the safe side.
The use of screeds are necessary in most installations, and with any resilient flooring, it really is worth spending that little extra to correct imperfections in the subfloor. These cement based compounds are liquid in use, usually applied to a depth of 3mm, and then harden to form a smooth surface suitable to receive your new floor. Labour costs can vary between jobs depending on work carried out. If this is not done though, dips and imperfections in the sub floor would otherwise be mirrored through. We take special care to mask all skirtings, saddles etc.
